StockTwits and Spam

As StockTwits continues to grow followers quickly, we are finding that our stream is getting hit with what we view as spam.

We realize that thousands of people are watching our feed daily and that the benefit to organizations hitting us with links to their sites is increasing so we are confronting unsolicited promotion head on.

Here is a brief synopsis on our policy towards spam.

1.  We want everyone who is real and has something to add or something to learn to be members of our community regardless of whether they also have some type of motive to promote.  So if you represent a financial enterprise but join our community and tweet valuable stuff that others appreciate, we love you. This includes, by the way, linking back to your blog or to your site on occasion to share something of value that you have written in a longer form.

We truly believe that if you share value over time without explicitly promoting, your brand will benefit in a huge way. In addition, if you are flat out good, people will click to your Twitter page and follow.  Indeed, this is a meritocracy.

However,

2.  If you link to your site or blog repeatedly throughout the day, in an effort to get subs, hits or sell google ads we will block you.

3.  If you link to a sign up page we will block you.

4. If you link to your product without adding value, we will block you.

Sorry to be so harsh but our first concern is setting a quality standard and tone where the members of our community know they can come and find real people sharing actionable ideas in real time with transparency and accountability.

If you have any questions about this policy please leave a comment on this blog or email me directly at phil@stocktwits.com.  If we’ve blocked you, still feel free to reach out as perhaps together we can find an acceptable
common ground.

hi, apparently I;ve been blocked from linking. frankly I just started out without reading spam policy, so if you could just "forgive" me my first day and de-block would be great.
the link is very informative and original information for the trading community.

    thx
  • this is nice information need to know more

Spam is really a big problem on the Internet specifically emails. Spam is an annoying thing that needs to be dealt with, so we'll have to be very careful not to be spammed.
  • Hi. I appear to have been blocked and I really don't know why. No spam, no links to to anything, no vulgar language, nothing. I've been a successful trader for many years and I can contribute a lot.
  • daplumba
i was blocked for calling mpgtrader a dummy. and if the unblock me ill do it again
  • the $$ was my idea, no wonder it sucks. back to drawing board...

When StockTwits first started I expected to see a lot of spam, especially from stock promoters but have been pleasantly surprised at how little their has been .... apart from Tim promoting his *%$^*& DVD's LOL.
Theses rules will tighten it up and enhance the site.
In regard to the $$, I haven't seen enough abuse for it to be a problem,
  • Great guidelines--thanks for the transparency. Sunday night was the first time I really felt there was a lot of noise (e.g., someone posting 11 consecutive low-content tweets in <5 minutes), so this is timely.

I'm always a little hesitant to post a link back to one of the weekly "StockTwits for Idiot Retail Investors" blog updates for fear of clogging the stream, since it feels kind of iffy to me, even though I think it's relevant stuff for some subset of the StockTwits community.

The reason I hesitate is because the $$ parameters is a little vague. I could see expanding the supported conventions to use a couple of three-character classifications that would take certain tweets out of the "All" stream, but let them be selectively tuned into:

$$/ This would be for general blog post updates or special-focus links.
    $$? General community questions.
$$- This is kind of a dumping ground of things perhaps not related to the overall market, but relevant to the general StockTwits community.

None of these would go into the "All" stream, but would serve as useful filters for those unsure about the etiquette around $$. And you'd still use the aggressive spam protection you have in place now.

    thanks firebones.

i think that youre right, there is some vagueness to it and still is after this blog post.

we are trying to capture the spirit as best we can and i think the vast majority of people who are very reasonable catch the gist.

in the next week or so i will try to better quantify the $$ and your input here in your response is greatly appreciated.
  • Perhaps, a better way would be to define what the $$ isn't.
  • ppearlman
thanks bro. will be a part of the definition for sure... what $$ does not include...... nice... also plan on writing about pace and time of day... for example, if u are going to go off topic and riff a bit much better in the evening or weekend than at 945am during a trading day...
  • Time of day, when a thought is relevant? Careful there, big brother. :)
  • ppearlman
thats not what i said. you just misquoted me. there is a time of day and week when the feed does not demand quite as much focus on the market action. it is very different to veer and make off topic comment or two at 940am while the market is opening and 1030pm on a saturday night while the market is closed.
  • I know, I understand, and agree...I just don't know how you're going to
define/enforce such wrong doings. That's all I meant, it'll be hard.
  • ppearlman
Weve been lucky to have had a great crew of early adopters who have set an exemplary tone.
  • haha our God is just!
  • I like the rules. StockTwits can't have a bunch of junk clogging up the feed. The site MUST be quality controlled as much as possible to maximize the benefit to the users. Furthermore, I agree with DoGooder. Individuals abuse the use of the "$" on tweets that do not relate to Finance. Action should be taken to thwart this activity IMO.
  • ppearlman
tx nick. see my comments to firebones... u guys are right and we will try to more thoroughly and reasonably define the $$.
  • Hey P. The rules seem fair enough. However, who does the enforcing?
