Yesterday’s outage at StockTwits
Yesterday (Thursday January 26th) StockTwits experienced a major outage from approximately 2:30 pm ET to 5 pm ET. During this period the site was unavailable to most users, with some users receiving an overcapacity message, and others unable to reach the site. There may have been some lingering problems for a smaller number of users until approximately 6pm ET when normal service was fully restored.
This outage was caused by a huge spike in traffic from suspicious sources, what appears to have been some form of Denial of Service attack. Our operations and development team was alerted to the site issues immediately, however it took several hours to identify the nature of the attacking traffic, create countermeasures to stop the attack and then bring our services back up to normal.
This outage only impacted users of StockTwits.com and related services; it did not impact our API partners.
We take this outage extremely seriously, as reliable access and performance is critical for our users, our community and our customers. Our team and outside experts from our vendors are currently reviewing our entire hosting and network infrastructure to identify ways to harden our service against these and similar kinds of attacks so that this doesn’t happen again.
